black currant tincture - fresh berry extract

Black currant tincture (ribes nigrum) is made with fresh berries/seeds I grow myself. Strained on 3/23/26.

Ingredients: fresh black current berries w/seed, menstruum is Everclear + spring water in 1:2, 45% ABV.

Black currant berries have one of the highest amounts of antioxidants. I consider them a superfood in the plant world, especially if they are eaten raw as you will also ingest high vitamin C content on top of the antioxidants. The tincture unfortunately does not preserve vitamin C (boo!). Vitamin C degrades quickly in alcohol and won't store. So, this tincture aims for the antioxidant content, and since I pulverize the berries into the menstruum, I hope for a small amount of vitamin E oil from the seeds to also add to this tincture. 

Other notes regarding black currant:

This is a great bush to have in your yard, if you want a source of high vitamin C & antioxidants. I make a syrup from the berries each year, which can be used to make gelatin gummies (jello), used on pancakes, and some might use this berry for fermented sodas. It has such a strong, unique flavor, that tastes like nothing else. The bushes grow easily in most conditions, the deer leave them alone, and you can propagate from cuttings easily. Just cut a branch off, stick it in moist ground - which you can do with elderberry as well. It's incredibly awesome when a plant is such a powerhouse of nutrients & grows readily like this. One of my favorites!
